Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Hit South Korea Today

Severe weather warnings issued as temperatures drop significantly in the coming days

Category: Science

South Korea is bracing for a day of severe weather as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even hail are expected across most regions on Monday, April 6, 2026. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued warnings, urging citizens to take precautions during their morning commutes.

As of 5 a.m. local time, temperatures were recorded at 10.1 degrees Celsius in Seoul, 9.3 in Incheon, and 9.1 in Suwon, with highs expected to reach between 13 and 18 degrees throughout the day. Rainfall predictions vary, with areas like Seoul, Incheon, and the western coastal areas expecting around 5 mm, whereas regions in the southern provinces could see up to 30 mm. The rain is expected to intensify from 6 a.m. to noon, spreading across the country before tapering off in the afternoon and evening, particularly in the southeastern provinces and Jeju Island.

The forecast also warns of potential short visibility and slippery roads in rain-affected areas, advising drivers to maintain safe distances and reduce speeds. "Be cautious of the conditions, especially with the possibility of hail and strong winds accompanying the thunderstorms," said a KMA official. They also highlighted the risk of property damage and agricultural losses due to the unpredictable weather.

Starting Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with morning lows ranging from -1 to 7 degrees Celsius. This drop is attributed to a cold front moving in from the northwest, bringing with it stronger winds that will make it feel even colder. By Wednesday morning, the temperature could hover around -1 to 6 degrees, with daytime highs not exceeding 19 degrees. The KMA noted that this marked change in temperature is about 5 to 10 degrees lower than average for this time of year, particularly affecting inland areas.

Looking ahead, the weather will remain mostly cloudy on Thursday, April 9. Rain is forecast to begin in Jeju and the southern coast during the early hours, gradually spreading nationwide by morning. The expected morning lows will range between 3 and 11 degrees, with daytime highs between 10 and 17 degrees.

In addition to the rain, the KMA has warned of strong winds and high waves at sea, particularly in the East Sea and coastal waters. From the evening of April 6, winds are expected to reach speeds of 30 to 60 km/h, creating waves as high as 4.0 meters. A strong wind advisory has been issued for the East Sea and other maritime areas, urging vessels to exercise caution.

As the storms approach, the KMA advises that areas may experience fog, particularly in the western sea, leading to visibility issues. Some islands may see thick fog with visibility dropping below 200 meters, coupled with drizzle. Officials have stressed the importance of checking navigation information for those traveling by sea.

With the rapid changes in weather, particularly in temperature and precipitation, citizens are reminded to stay informed and prepared for potential disruptions, especially in agriculture and transportation sectors. The KMA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
