Chuck Norris, the legendary martial artist and action star, has died at the age of 86. His family confirmed the news on social media, stating he passed away Thursday morning in Kauai, Hawaii, surrounded by loved ones and at peace.

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris grew up in a modest household. After his parents' divorce, he moved to California with his family, where he faced a challenging childhood marked by poverty and shyness. Norris joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958, and it was during his deployment in South Korea that he discovered martial arts, training in Tang Soo Do and judo.

Norris’s martial arts career flourished; he became a six-time undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate Champion. He founded his own martial arts style, Chun Kuk Do, and established the United Fighting Arts Federation, which has awarded over 3,300 black belts worldwide. His accomplishments earned him a place in the Black Belt magazine hall of fame, where he was credited with holding a 10th degree black belt, the highest honor possible.

Before making a name for himself in Hollywood, Norris opened a martial arts studio that attracted celebrity students, including Bob Barker and Priscilla Presley. It was actor Steve McQueen who encouraged him to pursue acting. Norris made his film debut in the 1968 movie The Wrecking Crew and gained prominence after starring alongside Bruce Lee in the 1972 film The Way of the Dragon, where they engaged in an iconic fight scene in Rome's Colosseum.

Throughout the 1980s, Norris starred in a series of action films that solidified his status as an action hero. Notable titles include Missing in Action, The Delta Force, and Code of Silence. His trademark roundhouse kick became a defining feature of his on-screen persona, and he was often portrayed as a tough, no-nonsense hero who fought against injustice.

In 1993, he took on perhaps his most famous role as Sergeant Cordell Walker in the television series Walker, Texas Ranger. The show ran for nine seasons, ending in 2001, and became a cultural phenomenon, showcasing Norris’s martial arts skills while promoting moral values. In 2010, he was honored with the title of honorary Texas Ranger by then-Governor Rick Perry.

Norris’s influence extended beyond film and television. He was actively involved in philanthropy, founding Kickstart Kids, a nonprofit organization aimed at teaching martial arts to children and instilling self-esteem. He was also a vocal supporter of gun rights and conservative political causes, having endorsed various Republican candidates over the years.

His family announced his death with a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing their gratitude for the support he received from fans. “To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” they wrote. They also noted that Norris had recently shared a sparring video on social media, where he humorously stated, “I don’t age. I level up.”

Despite his tough-guy image, Norris was known for his humility and kindness. He often credited his success to hard work and discipline, stating in a 1982 interview, “I wanted to project a certain image on the screen of a hero.” He believed that action films could tell meaningful stories, emphasizing that “it’s how it’s done” that matters.

Norris’s legacy is multifaceted. Not only did he revolutionize the portrayal of martial arts in American cinema, but he also became a beloved figure in popular culture, inspiring countless internet memes known as “Chuck Norris Facts.” These humorous exaggerations celebrated his toughness and contributed to his status as a cultural icon.

In recent years, Norris had taken on fewer acting roles, but he remained active in various projects, including the 2024 sci-fi action film Agent Recon and the upcoming Zombie Plane, where he was set to play himself alongside other stars. His ability to adapt and remain relevant in the entertainment industry is a testament to his enduring appeal.

Chuck Norris is survived by his wife, Gena O’Kelley, five children, and 13 grandchildren. His family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved patriarch.

As fans and colleagues reflect on his life and career, it is clear that Chuck Norris leaves behind a remarkable legacy as a martial artist, actor, and philanthropist who inspired millions through his work and personal values.
