Vinícius Júnior found himself on the bench for Real Madrid's match against Villarreal on Saturday, October 10, 2026, as head coach José Mourinho opted for a different strategy to revitalize the struggling forward.
Why it matters: This decision highlights Vinícius' current form struggles and raises questions about his role in the team moving forward. Mourinho's approach could impact both Vinícius' confidence and the team's performance.
Vinícius has scored just one goal in eight appearances this season, a stark drop from his previous seasons.
Fans are divided over Mourinho's choice, with some supporting the benching and others expressing frustration.
The decision reflects Mourinho's attempt to manage Vinícius' defensive duties, aiming to improve his offensive contributions.
Driving the news: Real Madrid hosted Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu for Matchday 8 of the 2026-27 La Liga season. Vinícius, who was fit and available, did not start the match, leading to speculation about his future with the club.
José Mourinho admitted that Vinícius has not found his best form this season, prompting the tactical shift.
Summer signing Yan Diomande took Vinícius’ place on the left wing, partnering with Kylian Mbappé upfront.
Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler supported the attack from midfield, illustrating Mourinho's commitment to a different lineup.
State of play: Vinícius' current statistics paint a concerning picture. In his eight appearances this season, he has managed only one goal and three assists.
Last season, he scored 23 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions, demonstrating his potential.
His most prolific season came in 2023-24, where he netted 24 goals in just 39 matches.
Fans have expressed their disappointment at his form, leading to occasional whistles during home games at the Bernabéu.
The big picture: Mourinho’s decision to bench Vinícius has sparked a mix of reactions among supporters and analysts alike.
Some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, arguing that other players, like Mbappé, should also face scrutiny.
One comment on social media suggested that the benching reflects favoritism, implying that Mbappé has undue influence over team selections.
Conversely, some supporters welcomed the decision, with one user stating, "Finally, they benched the crybaby Vini Jr. Hopefully, he never plays again." This sentiment indicates a faction of fans eager for a change.
What they're saying: Mourinho addressed the situation in a recent press conference, expressing empathy for Vinícius' struggles.
"What makes me feel bad, and sad, is knowing he wants to do well, to be the Vinícius who wins games and trophies," Mourinho said.
He emphasized the need to help Vinícius find his form, stating, "He deserves to be helped. He wants to be the Vinícius who's brought joy to Madrid fans." This shows Mourinho's commitment to supporting the player.
The coach hinted at future adjustments, saying, "Will he always play until 'our' Vini returns, or will the time come when I think the best way of helping him is with a specific plan?" This suggests a more strategic approach to Vinícius' development.
By the numbers: Analyzing Vinícius' performance reveals stark contrasts to his previous seasons.
This season, he has made eight appearances, scoring just one goal and providing three assists.
In comparison, last season, he had 59 appearances, scoring 23 goals and assisting 11 times.
His best performance came in the 2023-24 season, where he scored 24 goals in 39 matches, indicating a sharp decline in his output this year.
What's next: Moving forward, Vinícius' role in the squad remains uncertain.
Mourinho's tactical adjustments may continue to evolve depending on Vinícius' response in training and upcoming matches.
Fans will follow closely closely to see if Vinícius can regain his form and find a place back in the starting eleven.
Real Madrid's next matches will be a test for both Vinícius and Mourinho as they navigate this challenging phase.
As Real Madrid continues its La Liga campaign, the focus will remain on Vinícius Júnior and his ability to bounce back from this tough period. With the right support and strategy, he could return to the form that made him a star.
